You Got To Stay In It To Win It.

This week Reverend Brown reads from Genesis 48:11-19 and talks to us about having to stick with the program if we are going to get results. Whether it's an exercise for our physical body or following in the foot steps of Christ for our spiritual body if we don't stick with it we shall forever be disappointed. Just as Joseph followed gods path and was given great riches we too will receive our due if we only stick with the path God has chosen for us.

God Sent You Ahead.

This week Reverend Brown reads from Genesis 45:1-12 and reminds us that all our blessings come for a reason. When we have been so blessed it's incumbent upon us to carry this blessing on to others. Where ever we are in our daily duties we can always lend a hand to others along the way. In doing so we carry on the blessings we have received.

This Family Could Have Been Saved.

This week Reverend Brown reads from Genesis 25:5-11,19-21,23-24,28 and asks us what have we done in our families to create strife and discontent. With the realization that we are human and fallible we always need to be conscious of how our treatment of members in our family can turn them against each other. Looking at our relationships we can always find ways to improve how we relate to one another.

Esau and Jacob As Rivals.

This week is a very special event as this is the ordination sermon of our own Mr. Wesley Sun. Mr. Sun has been with First Baptist as a seminary intern and during this year has received the call and chose First Baptist as the home to enter into Gods service. Join us in listening to this sermon where he shows he is competent to be a leader in the church of god. Mr. Sun reads from Genesis 25:19-35 Mr Sun gives us a fresh look at this story and how it might relate to our modern world.

At the end of this sermon the church body agreed unanimously that Mr. Sun should become Reverend Sun. It is with great pleasure we welcome Reverend Sun into the pastoral staff of First baptist.

Stop The Baby Mama Drama.

Reading from Genesis 21:9-21 Reverend Brown reminds us to always maintain our perspective when dealing with others. How often do we use our children as pawns in relationships with other adults. Isn't it time to accept our responsibilities as Fathers and Mothers to take care of and love our children while leaving our personal wants and desires out of the picture.

Two Kinds of Laughter.

When asked to do the impossible how often have we given as our response a cynical laugh, with the tag line "Who Me?" Reading from Genesis 15:5-6;18:11-14;21:1-8 we hear the story of Sara who on hearing Gods plan for her laughs too. It's only when Gods plan plays out and she sees it is true does she really laugh. So when we are asked of the impossible, do we laugh cynically or heartily at a job well done?

How Much Are You Worth.

With September and everyone back in school everyone is back from vacation and we have Reverend Jesse Brown back in the pulpit. Reading from Genesis 1:26-30 Reverend Brown this week talks to us about self worth. What do we need to feel worthy. Is it a complement, is it a man or is it a new car. If these are what cause us to feel worthy maybe we need to revisit that. The love of a man a women or the smell of a new car maybe be fleeting, but the love of Jesus and God is never ending. We need to accept that all we truely need to feel loved is to accept Christ into our hearts.

Gods Word Lasts Forever.

This week we were relieved to hear our mission team made it safely to New York with the hurricane bearing down on Jamaica. With Reverend Brown in and the group seeking ways to get out of New York, our own Reverend Joanne Lindstrom provides the sermon today. She talks to us about how it\'s not the big things the continue to pave the way for the Lord in the world but the little things we do everyday. The child helped with homework, the beggar who we give a quarter too, the single mother who we helped get the groceries home. Along with Joanne this week we have our own Anne Geddes providing the musical selections for this week.

With Reverend Brown off in Jamaica for the annual youth mission trip we have his brother in the Pulpit, Reverend Alex Brown. Reverend Alex is very involved with with prison ministries around Chicago. This week he talks to us about reaching out to everyone and anyone you might meet. You never know who's heart you might touch and who's life you might change. The Cultural Captivity Of The Church.

This week Reverend Brown explores whether changes in the church are the result of gods influence or the influence of society. Reading from Jeremiah 7:11-15 Reverend Brown asks is your church a victim of change for cultural reasons or is God directing you in a new way. When church's ignore Gods word to fit in society they risk losing their way and becoming negative influences in our world. .

Who is in your five?

Well it is summer in the city and with the long days and warm nights we've become a little lazy here at FBCpreacher and am running a little behind in our posting of the podcasts. So for the next few weeks we will be putting up two sermons a week trying to catch up. So here is Rev. Browns sermon from July 8th were he reads from Zephanniah 3:1-5,8-9. With our world so connected who are on your favorite five? Do all your connections reflect gods intentions? If you have connections in your life that don't extend gods reach into the world it might be time to review who your spending your time with.

Are We Good Samaritans or Just Samaritans?

Once again another year has gone by and we are again at our annual Mens Day. This year we are pleased to have as our guest speaker Reverend Paul Ford. Using as the bases of his sermon this week Reverend Ford reads from Luke 10:25-37. We all know the story of the Good Samaritan but do we ever stop to think about the robbers who the story tells us very little. Why indeed their actions were dastardly what drove them to rob and beat the man. How often have we passed by others who are sitting by the side of the road neglected and abandoned by society. Only when these unfortunate people are driven to acts of violence do we ever pay then any heed. Reverend Ford reminds us when we pass by our fellow man and fail to help them along, we are as complicit in their crimes as they are..

Become As Little Children?

This week we see that when the lord has a message he sees it gets out. With only minutes to prepare our student intern Mr Wesley Sun was pressed into the pulpit to give this weeks sermon. Thus this week Wesley preaches from Matthew 18:1-3. Where Jesus makes the statement that to enter the kingdom of heaven we all must be like children. He explores several ideas of what it's like to be children and makes the case that we as christians must always be on guard to protect those in our society that need protection as we too are never far from needing protection ourselves.

It's Time To Relocate?

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of Isaiah 5:1-3,6-11. Reverend Brown asks us how our daily living reflects the ways of the lord. If we are not truly living in the ways of the lord then we may not only need to change our ways but move from where we are.

Also this week we participated in the funeral service of Carl Price a long time member of First Baptist. He was the husband of our music director Virgina Price, please keep Virgina and her family in your prayers as they go though time time of adjustment. As a tribute to the family we have included as our musical selections two selections from this weeks service.

Does God Hang Up On Us?

We wish to thank all who prayed for our Senior pastor Reverend Jesse Brown when he was taken ill two Sundays ago. This week we welcome him back after many trips to the Doctor and a short stay in the hospital. This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of Isaiah 1:10-11,14-20. Reverend Brown talks to us how Gods conservation with us is never finished. While we may hang up on people from whom we don't appreciate the message they are delivering, God message is consistent and forever. Reverend Brown reminds us this week that no matter how far we may have strayed from the message God keeps the line open if only we take the time to listen.

This week we also unveiled our new sign. While a long time in coming the wait was well worth it. We now have a new presence in the community that will announce our activities in the neighborhood.

Congratulations Revira.

With June comes the end of school and graduations for some. As is the tradition around this time we have a service celebrating the accomplishments of our youth during the last school year. This year we are proud to have in the graduating class of 2007 Revira Davis. Revira came to the First Baptist Family at a period in her life of much turmoil. In her adoptive family and First Baptist she found a home in which she has managed to grow and develop from the shy girl that stayed back to the confident out going young women that takes the pulpit today. Please join with us in congratulating Revira in her graduation from High School and wishing her well in her continued endeavors as she heads off to university.

Please continue praying with us for the continued improvement of our senior pastor Reverend Jesse Brown. While spending a week resting he hopes to return to his regular duties this week.

The Infrastructure Of Sin.

Reading from Amos 5:10-15,21-24 and focusing on verses 21-24 Reverend Brown reminds us our duty to God extends way beyond the borders of our Churches. It is not right in Gods eyes for us to praise and commit our life to Jesus on Sunday if when we leave Church we allow any manner of indignities befall our neighbors and fellow citizens. We much always stand up against evil even when that stand may come at a personal cost to ourselves.

An additional note this week, is please pray for our Pastor Reverend Brown as this week after finishing this sermon he was taken ill and had to be taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals. While it seems in the end this was a minor incident from which he will recover with some rest it serves as reminder how fragile our grip on this world is. We here wish him a speedy recovery.

Developing Child Protecting Ministries

This Is the Third in the series of sermons Reverend Dr. Alan V. Ragland gave as part of our Annual Revival. In this final sermon Reverend Ragland implores us to use ourselves and our buildings to create places of sanctuary for our children. There are so many forces, though globalization, commercial interests, gangs and violence that are trying to take our children from us we need to stick together to build communities that value and build up our children. Hope you enjoy this final sermon of what was a truly inspiring set of sermons for our revival this year.

Power of A Prayer With a Promise.

This week it was our annual Women's Day Celebration. The day we honor the contribution of the women of First Baptist. As is the tradition we had a guest speaker Rev. Alice Greene as our preacher this Sunday. Using as her text 1 Samual 9-19 Rev. Alice demonstrates how the power of prayer is increased with our commitment to the lord by keeping our promises. While Hanna desperately wanted a child, after promising to commit that child to god if she was allowed to conceive that child. She didn't renege on that promise to the lord. Rev. Alice shows how by keeping our promises the power of prayer is increased.

Do What You Are Told To Do.

This week being the 5th Sunday in the month it's customary at First Baptist to have the youth of the church perform the offices of the service. Often too at this time Reverend Brown takes a break to have one of the other members of the pastoral staff take a turn in the pulpit. Thus this week we not only have the youth of the church providing the musical selections but our own Joanne Lindstrom take the preaching duties. In her sermon this week she teaches from the text of Acts 9:1-6. While we all pride ourselves in our individuality we are often being buffeted by demands of others. We are told what to do by our schools, family members, and employers we often don't listen to what God is telling us to do. Reverend Lindstorm reminds us that while listening to all the other demands in our life we need to listen to the demands of God and when told, we need to do what we are told to do.

Drama of worship.

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of Revelation 5:1-15,11-14. In heaven there are no songs their are not words that are not of praise. Here on earth how often do we seek words that glorify anything but god and call it praise. Reverend Brown speaks to us this week about what we should be singing and playing when praising God.

God Is Worthy of Praise.

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of Revelation 4:1-11,. So often we get caught up in the trappings of how we praise we often forget it's that we praise that is important. God doesn't care if we sing in tune or on the beat if we are truly singing his praises. Reverend Brown this week reminds us to praise God every day and every way no matter how we are dressed or what troubles we have encountered that day.

Which Jesus do you see.

For those able to pull themselves out of bed this Easter morning we were treated to not only a wonderful Sun Rise service but a tremendous sermon from our young intern Mr. Wesley Sun. With this being resurrection Sunday and the focus being on Jesus Christ Mr. Sun asks us who and what is this person we call Jesus. With so many representations of Jesus in the literature and media who do we see as Jesus.

Honoring Women Of Faith.

This week as part of our continuing celebration of international Women's Month we have our own Reverend Joanne Lindstrom preaching to us. This week she uses as the basses of her sermon Luke 10:38-42. Reverend Joanne talks to us how there's many ways to experience and develop faith. In the midst of our own faith experience we often don't acknowledge how others are developing and serving the lord.

The Joy of Pardon.

This week as part of our celebration of international Women's Month we had as our guest speaker Reverend Jeanette B. Jordan of the Pullman Presbyterian Church. Reverend Jordan talks to us about how many times forgiveness isn't something we do for others but often we need to do for ourselves. Even when we are wronged often our own need to get revenge or harboring a grudge often hurts us as much as the original wrong. Reverend Jordan draws from her own life experience to illustrate how when we can actually forgive someone that has wronged us we ourselves can be freed and move on.

Love Is Not Optional

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of 1 John 3:11-24,. One of the things that is the hardest as Christians to do is show love and compassion for all. This week Reverend Brown reminds us that we can't pick and choose who we love.

Why Do You Just Go Along To Get Along.

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 2:7-11,15-17,. This weeks theme comes from the idea of, how often do we just go along with the world to keep the peace, rather then challenging the injustices and corruption that surround us. Very often as christians we adopt the don't ask don't tell policy. When we see things as long as they don't directly effect us we cast a blind eye even though these issues are against the basic teachings of Christ. While we may in the short term keep the piece in our world over time these issues will cause us pain in our society or personal lives. Thus, Rev Brown this week asks us to evaluate ourselves and ask are we just going along with the status quo to get along? If we are we should look at what we are allowing to pass by and challenge it if it isn't in the way of Jesus Christ.

Bread for the Journey.

With this Sunday being the last Sunday in February, which is also Black History Month we had a special service presented by our Generation 2000 members. Besides their special presentation and musical selections that included a solo by Ms. Tulani Brackett, our services were presided over by Reverend Dr. David Daniels.

Reverend Daniels' wanted to talk to us about what we as a organization is providing to feed the hunger of our members in a way to encourage growth in the church. Previous generations have had slavery and civil rights as causes to focus on to maintain direction in our institutions and churches. In the 21st century what are we giving to our members particularly our young member to cause them to come to the church for meaning. Dr. Daniels endeavors to answer that question with his sermon this week.

Anecdote To The Death Of Permanence.

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 14:1-14,. With the world changing around us. Whether it be the loss of a pet, loved one or someone close to us. As our communities change, though gentrification, the inevitable grind of life or the industrialization of our world. Nothing in this world stays the same. Reverend Brown teaches us how Jesus is always there and unchanging in what is expected of us and granted to us by our faith and continual work here on earth. No matter how things change here our reward is always the same.

Double Life of Good Christian People.

This week we managed to figure out the heating of the chapel so while it was frightfully cold out we were warm enough to be back in our old surroundings. This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 11:17-27,. Reverend Brown this week explores what often is the double many of lead as Christians. While outwardly professing faith in the Jesus and the father inwardly we hold doubts. When things don't go as we plan we often blame God not believing in his plan or his faith. Still though often we then demand of god to make things right.

What Type of Sheep Are You?

Couple of points about this weeks podcast. Weather in Chicago took a turn for the cold this week with our first sub zero temperatures we have seen in a while. Even with our new heating plant we were unable to keep our main sanctuary warn enough for Sundays worship service. Thus at the last minute we moved our service to a warmer room in the church. The sound quality this week isn't what it has been but it was the best we could do given the conditions. Hopefully you can get the message that is being delivered.

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 10:1-5,7-18,. Reverend Brown asks us what type of sheep we are? Are we weak and graze on the outside only to be attacked when danger is present? Do we run to the middle of the crowd and hide from danger. Or, are we the type of sheep that rings our bell and leads the others away from from danger?

How to Get Out Of The Darkness

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 8:12-20,12:44-45,. How often when there is darkness all around us do we arrogantly try to light our world. Jesus reminds us that he is the light of the World. Looking to his light we will move into a world of light rather then trying to provide our own light.

I Just Want to Hear Him Say Well Done

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 5:19-29,. Though this teaching Reverend Brown reminds us how just like Jesus was committed to his father, we need to be totally committed to the words of his father the lord God. Only though this commitment can we ever hope to enter the gates of heaven.

Don't Go Snapping On My Jesus!

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of John 8:31-38,48-56,58-59. In this text Jesus is set upon by some of his listeners when he dares to bring up their history. How many of us will attack the messenger when our situation or the situation of our family is called into question. As listeners we must always listen though the words and try to understand the meaning while as speakers we must always endeavor to not offend our listeners. Reverend Brown asks us to listen critically and question intelligently and not strike out at messages we disagree with. Often when we hear though to the meaning of the message we see truths in ourselves that are not always evident.

Humiliation And Exaltation

This week Reverend Brown teaches from the text of Philippians 2:1-11 Teaching from this text Rev. Brown reminds us as Jesus showed us to put God and his will above all. Whether it's singing his praises in Church or the most mundane task around the home. We need to perform the tasks as if God had asked us directly to perform it and not for the glorification of our own self.

As this was the 5th Sunday of December it was Youth Sunday and the children of the church performed the offices of the service for us. Our Musical selections are of the children's choir this Sunday.

We at First Baptist would like to thank everyone that has listened in this year to this ministry. A special Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our subscribers.
